Summary: This study compares two common methods for placing an object into a reconstructed forensic scene from 2D video frames: ray pinning (matching control points between a 3D model and the image) and model-based image matching (MBIM) (manually aligning the model by visual overlay). Using a simulated scene filmed by three fixed cameras, where a Blueguns rifle was placed on the ground—and a 3D scan to calibrate the cameras, the authors measured how accurately each method recovered the rifle’s position and orientation. MBIM produced significantly more accurate object positioning than ray pinning, while both methods performed similarly for orientation accuracy.
