Lens Correction Techniques And Their Application in Forensic Photogrammetry

Summary: This study compares three ways to correct camera lens distortion in forensic images: control point, straight-line, and manual correction. Using an ideal undistorted image that was artificially distorted at ten levels, the authors corrected each version with all three methods and measured remaining error by comparing pixel locations before distortion and after correction. The control point method was most accurate, manual correction ranked second, and the straight-line method performed worst, making control points the preferred approach for forensic work (with the added benefit of camera location information).
